Homeless and Destitute Fed
Divine Skill and Social Welfare Foundation set out to feed 1100 Homeless and Destitute Individuals in and around Durban. Having the plan in heart and mind, the initiative was to ensure that these deserving people had a meal that would be able to sustain them and show them that despite what had transpired, they were not forgotten or alone.
The team at Divine Skill and Social Welfare Foundation had come together with their vision and were able to select the meals, refreshments and condiments that would best suit those being fed. Then thanks to an Anonymous and most generous donor who single handedly funded this entire project thus bringing a vision into reality.
The date was set, 21st November 2020. We embarked on our journey and began our morning with the meal preperation. Food was being cooked to feed those hungry mouths and help bring a smile upon their face. The team met very early and ensured everything went according to plan.
The meals were being prepared by two professional cooks and had been done so to perfection. The fresh meals once prepared were packed to the brim of each container and shrink wrapped to ensure that all the goodness and flavor was locked in.
The team worked swiftly and tirelessly to pack the food containers neatly away in boxes. With the generosity of each individual present that helped to make this a success, there was 1300 food meals packed, which surpassed the initial expectation. This gave us hope, that now we could feed more people than we had planned for.
Avoca Durban
We had reached our first destination, Avoca, Durban. There we found families left scattered and squashed within squatter camps where during this pandemic, they were forced to share small shacks and this left no room for social distancing among themselves.
Our hearts were sore seeing their condition and we lept forward to pass through the meals to these grateful and loving people who were beyond extatict to see us with the biggest smiles to be seen. This was a sign indeed that making others happy is truly a reward on its own.
Jewish Club 1 Emergency Camp - Durban’s Beachfront
Here we met many individuals who were afflicted extremely by the Covid-19. Majority of them were unemployed and homeless, they had physical impairments and disabilities which meant they were bed ridden and struck with the inability to seek work or aid on their own.
They had raised their hands and prayed whilst giving thanks for the meals that were being handed to them.
Albert Park – Durban
Once a place filled with Whoonga Addicts, now had white tents pitched up filled with homeless and destitute people that were left with nothing once affected by the Pandemic.
They were merely kept there with a shelter only over their head. Food and refreshments were handed to them as they accepted with open arms, at times a few would return to take food for those who were not able to come out of the tents due to their inability to move or be mobile.
This brought us to the realization that more needs to be done, with the help of others that are willing to join hands and make a difference, we can reach many more people and help feed, cloth and provide so much more to those in need.
Covid-19 Camp – Greyville, Durban
With more families and individuals affected by this disease we could not turn our backs on helping those in need. We made our way to the camp and found again many people that were left with no homes but these tents as their only source of refuge.
It was saddening to see that there was not much more could do at that time due to the pandemic and most of them having to go back to enjoy their meals for lunch.
